Data Handling revision

Sunday, January 07th, 2007

We need to start the Algebra, Shape and Space module now. I will schedule a revision session for Data and for Number before the March exams.

BBC ByteSize has some revision material on data handling

As we all pay for this through the TV licence, I think you ought to get your money’s worth! I’d allocate an hour to working through theĀ  ByteSize tests and seeing where you need to ask more questions or do more work.

Cumulative frequency curves

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

The video above concentrates on drawing the cumulative frequency curve and on using the curve to find the median and the upper and lower quartiles.

You need to check that you can answer questions like “what percentage of the cress seedlings are greater than 50mm in length?”, and you may have intervals written in different ways. I’ll have the handout referred to up here in a day or so!

Averages from Frequency tables

How to find the mean, median and the mode from a frequency table. You can download a worksheet with the data in tables as the slides may not be fully clear in the YouTube video (I used fonts that were a bit small).

What is ‘dodgy’ about this chart?

Bar chart comparing GDPs of European and other countries
The Leitch Review of Skills education is a weighty tome from the Government that sets out policy for education and training for adults in the UK. One sharp eyed manager spotted this chart lurking in the appendicies.

The chart has been drawn in a way that could be called ’sharp practice’ or ‘dodgy’. Can you see what is wrong with the chart? Click ‘read more’ for my answer….

Mean, median and mode

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

The video above is a commercially produced item - nice animation, Garage Band sound track, and it covers the basic facts well. Makes a change from me talking over PowerPoint slides!

Tree diagrams (probability part 2)

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

I’ll add the question sheet on tree diagrams sometime on Monday.

Probability part 1

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

The screencast above deals with

* The probability scale
* Expected frequency
* Bags of balls
* Mutually exclusive events
* Possibility space diagrams
* Independent events

A forthcoming sequel will talk you through tree diagrams. You need to have a recent version of the Flash Player installed to view videos from YouTube - try updating the Flash Player plug in on your Web browser if you have problems or just see a white square instead of the video.

Each brief explanation is introduced by a black slide with white text, use the scroll control to rapid wind through the screencast for the section you want to review.

You can download an MS Excel spreadsheet with probability simulations to go with the screencast. The spreadsheet simulates tossing a coin 100 times, and also simulates 100 repeats of tossing a coin 30 times to draw a chart.
