About the syllabus

I teach the AQA Syllabus B GCSE Mathematics and we enter students for the intermediate tier.

This is a modular syllabus, and we study the Number module first, the Data Handling module next and then work through the Algebra, Shape and Space module last. There are two short pieces of coursework, a data handling project and an Algebra investigation.

The GCSE Maths Syllabus will change in the academic year 2007/08 and we are all waiting to find out more about the ‘functional skills’ test that will form part of GCSE maths in the new syllabus. See the AQA Syllabus page for details.

    Hello,
I am BA hons QTS trained in primary education. I will be moving out to France in July. I have found there is a niche in the market to teach English children their GCSEs. Firstly, am I qualified to do this? Also, could you point me in the direction of which syllabuses to follow and to give me a few pointers of how actually to put them in for the examinations in France?
Please forgive me for asking a lot from you, however I am not sure who to ask these questions!

    Much appreciation
    L.Keen

    Hello L.Keen

I haven’t a clue about your qualification status as it involves working in another country and a change of age range! I’d try to find someone teaching or running a school in the niche you mention.

EdExcel, AQA are two exam boards that offer GCSE Maths. The syllabus is available from each site along with specimen papers and examiners’ reports (ie what students get wrong a lot). The exam boards might know about entering students who are studying abroad.

    Good luck

    Hello Ann

Up to C grade on Foundation.

The syllabus changed last year, so there is now only Foundation and Higher, the same as other GCSEs.

I suggest you download the syllabus from AQA and have a read (its a large PDF file, freely available)
