The calculator module 5 paper
You know what was in your exam earlier today - I haven’t a clue!
Where there any questions on the following topics?
- Pythagoras
- Trigonometry
- Areas of shapes
- Volume questions
- Anything to do with circles
- Trial and improvement
If you can remember anything and you were doing the Modular Module 5 paper, just pop a comment on this post.
Those are topics that can crop up on the calculator paper, the one next Monday, but it is possible to have questions on the non-calculator paper (leave your answer in terms of Pi and so on).
There will be a revision session this Friday morning.
June 5th, 2007 17:51
These were on the paper:
Simplifying and factorising equations,
Expressions for length,area and volume,
Pythagoras’ Theorem,
Angles in a kite, inside a circle.
Angles in a circle,
Transformations,
Trigonometry,
An x - squared graph,
Volume of a cube and area of a circle.
June 5th, 2007 18:42
Thanks Sarah, I’ll use these topics to focus the revision on Friday am!
June 7th, 2007 21:12
This is the list of topics our teacher gave us straight after the exam and previoius year 11’s have said that he is usually spot on when predicting paper 2 as they always get loads of A*’s
sine and cosine rule
tri ratios
nth term
quadratic formula
transforming graphs (multiple choice)
algebraic simplification( powers etc)
equations with fractions
factorising
trial and improvement (definite)
simultaneous equations
congruent and similar triangles
enlargements
constructions
obtaining values from trig graphs
areas of sectors and lengths of arcs
June 8th, 2007 08:23
Thanks Richard!
I’m sure your teacher is an ace topic spotter, but my students are taking an intermediate level paper. That means they are not going to see areas of sectors and solving quadratics by formula. Apart from that my list was sort of similar…
Good luck with your second paper.
June 8th, 2007 14:22
So intermediat students shouldnt revise all those topics?
Any body know what exact topics itermediat students have to revise?
Thanks
June 9th, 2007 23:36
Sarah, did you do the exam and you said these were on the paper? what do you mean?
June 10th, 2007 08:34
Ross
Revise everything! But especially straight line graph, surface area, ‘packing problems’ (the kind that have a box of a certain size and you have to fit cans of beans in), circles (circumference, area, cylinder) and possibly an enlargement question under transformations.
I could be totally wrong, and there will be lots of other things as well.
Andreas - Sarah meant what she said, her list is a list of the topics covered by questions on the first Module 5 paper.

What Exam Board Are You Talking About People, The Reason Being I Do AQA
Thanks

June 11th, 2007 09:24
Dj, it was AQA - hope everyone had a good exam. I won’t get a look at the paper for some time.

October 28th, 2007 09:52
Hello Sam
Well, the module 5 section of your revision book would be a good place to start, as some past papers!
Your grades are coming up each time, an improvement from F to D in one year is excellent progress, so you have shown that you have the ability to learn new maths!
Your teachers would have advised you to retake only Module 5 for a reason - they have access to your Uniform Mark Scale marks for the other modules.
I’d focus on algebra, the shape and space formulas and some angle facts as a starting point but there is no substitute for plenty of past papers!
November 1st, 2007 19:30
okay its sam again so i would need to focus on algebra the shape n spac formulas and some angles is that right? okay kool
I have so revised everything i need to know about trigonometry n pythagorus theorem also algebra i ahve revised apart from that i dont understand anything in module 5 my exam is next week and i need you to please tell me what would be needed to learn importantly and i dnt have a clue about simultaneous equasions i understand parts of it but all that about the plus and minus and which specifc equasion to do first oh gosh im very determined to get a c this tym please help thnksx
November 2nd, 2007 08:59
Get a revision book! Ask your teacher!
November 6th, 2007 09:58
omg…its in 30 minutes…3rd time lucky?
November 6th, 2007 16:47
How hard was that paper today!? Surely the worst paper ever? All the other times I had a slight feeling of hope that I perhaps had scraped a C…its a definate D I fear. What was that hexagon Q about?
My life is over…I can’t pass maths
November 6th, 2007 18:16
Hello Peach
It is never as bad as you think it is. I have not seen today’s paper as I’m not allowed to see them until the exam board says so.
November 7th, 2007 13:18
Hi Keith…I really hope your right! I also hope that Friday paper2 will be really easy. I also found out today that If I fail I can have a 4th attempt in June. I wonder if your not aloud to see it untill the other paper has been completed, because my maths teacher said that what doesn’t come up in 1 is likely to in 2. I guess pythagoras is coming up then? Do you have any advise on revison?
Thanks
November 23rd, 2007 17:35
Can anybody link me to a module 5 - summer 2007 past paper? If you can’t then am i right in believing module 5 will consist of the following:
Simplifying and factorising equations,
Expressions for length,area and volume,
Pythagoras’ Theorem,
Angles in a kite, inside a circle.
Angles in a circle,
Transformations,
Trigonometry,
An x - squared graph,
Volume of a cube and area of a circle.
November 25th, 2007 18:56
Hello i’ve got my Module 5 exam next June i think :/. When do you think I should start the revision to allow me enough time to understand all the higher tier stuff?!?
Also any tips/hints about the paper?!?
Thankyou

also where can i find a good revision site .most of them arnt very good and im looking for one that will actually behelpful for my module 5 exam
May 18th, 2008 13:50
If its the AQA Modular Specification B, Higher Tier you are doing, I was was given a specimen paper for this Mondays exam. This was to give us a rough idea of what topics to expect in the exam, I would say to revise them.
This included:
Plans and Elevations
Parallel Lines
Area of a Circle
Simple Equations
Equation of a Straight Line
Bearings
Enlargements
Surface Area of a Cuboid
Fractions
Solving more Complex Equations
Scale Factors
Circle Theorems
Harder Equations of a Straight Line
Sin Graphs
Algebraic Expressions
Rearranging a Formula
Vectors
Calculator Paper, going off the Specimen Paper, the exam is likely to include:
Distance Time Graphs
nth Term
Multiplying and Factorising Equations
Regular Polygons
Solving Equations
Area
Construction of Angles
Percentages
Calculating Length of Sides
Solving Inequalities
More Complex Calculation of Length of Sides
Calculating Size of Angles
Simplifying Equations
Even more complex Calculation of Angles
Hope that helps, and good luck
This Isnt Much Helpto me as im doign foundation lmao
May 18th, 2008 17:40
I’ve not taught a GCSE class this year and the syllabus has changed so the best person in the world to ask about revision topics this year is YOUR MATHS TEACHER!!
However, one of my neighbours is taking maths as a mature student and her practice Module 5 paper at foundation level had things like…
Parallel lines (alternate and corresponding)
Angles inside a quadrilateral (add to 360)
A nice question about diameters and radii of circles - no pi involved just knowing that radius is half diameter
Reading things off a calibration graph
Reading points of a straight line graph with negative coordinates
Collecting terms and multiplying out brackets
And a lot more things..
May 18th, 2008 17:52
Best way to revise maths is by doing lots of past papers and marking them yourself to see where you have gone wrong.
May 18th, 2008 20:20
thanks everyone.
And kieth i go to a school where there isn’t any point of having a teacher and you have to do everything yourself. but thanks for the advice anyway
by the way i doing my higher tier paper tommorow and i’m dreading it. i hope it goes well for me and for all the other people that are taking the same exam
May 18th, 2008 21:44
Yup, good luck everyone.
Aiysha has a point past papers are a good way to revise. Helps if you can find answer schemes to check yourself with. Some of the textbooks have ‘revision papers’ in the back.
Cheers
May 20th, 2008 13:39
THANKX SO MUCH LOVE U GUYS KEEP IT UP
May 26th, 2008 17:00
why are some people talking about doing a intermediate paper…i thought theres only foundation and higher now and on the foundation the highest you can get is a C…for revision iv been going through past papers and all the the questions that i couldnt answer i put it into a list and i revised how to answer them and i find thats the best revision technique for me…
May 26th, 2008 17:03
oops my bad they were asking that in 2007…but yeh i did the foundation non calculator and thought it went really well
May 26th, 2008 21:01
Hello 999 (strange name to use)
Yup, last year there were three different levels and this year there are two. Yours is the first group to take the new exams, ad really good luck to you all.
May 27th, 2008 15:45
hello KiethB…do you know what percentage you would need to get a C grade on the foundation paper…when i did the non calculator paper on the 19th i counted up the marks awarded for the questions that i felt confident with and it totaled 72 out of 100 what mark would i need to get on the calculator paper to get a C in maths (ive also handed in coursework)
May 29th, 2008 15:58
Thank you this has been so much help
I hope i do well . . x
May 29th, 2008 16:35
can anyone tell me what the grade boundaries are for foundation?
and what sort of stuff will be on the calculator maths paper :s
i’m really stuck, i’m not sure what i need to revise..
May 30th, 2008 09:10
did really bad on non calculator due to know revision checks. only need 40 percent to get an A though due to doing better on other modules. im revising for the calculator paper and have been looking high and low for a sllyubus. Thanks Heather, you are a genius.
May 30th, 2008 11:18
Right iv got my calculator paper coming on up and im doing foundation AQA paper the questions in the paper are based around the list that was provided at the top of the page. But also stuff such as the nth term and factoriing. just remember for your circles you need to know Radius, Diameter, Chord and sectors. You’ll also have to know your angles… Corrosponding, Vertically opposite, and Supplimentary angles, as it may ask you not to find out the value of the angle but what type of angles are these (Google these if you dont know what i mean) These are what i have been tought, im not saying these will deffinetely be in there because to be honest, who really does know? even our teachers find out on the day after we have sat our exam whats inside them but for the list i got from my teacher for my non-calculator i felt happy with after the exam. Good Luck everybody! Steph x
May 31st, 2008 14:31
i think these are the grade boundaries for higher:
>84% = A*
67-83%= A
50-66%=B
34-49%=C
20-33%=D
13-19%=E
May 31st, 2008 14:32
for foundation tier 70%+ C this is what i found out through searching the internet!
May 31st, 2008 14:34
not everything i wrote i showing so ill just give the link this is how i found out the grade boundaries

May 31st, 2008 21:28
Good luck all, you are certainly showing good research skills!
As I’ve warned people on the front page, I haven’t taught the new syllabus this year, so can’t help too much with topics and so on.

And The 2nd says 2F
can someone please tell me the subjects i need to revise for module 5 please asap (:
May 17th, 2009 22:01
For tomorrow I suggest revising everything except the Data handling stuff.
Revise especially Algebra, Shape and Measure just briefly look over other stuff because looking over past papers in AQA there has only been the odd question on Fractions or Ratios. It’s paper 1 tomorrow so don’t revise stuff where you need a calculator.
Good Luck with the Exam!
May 27th, 2009 10:59
what stuff will come up on foundation paper?
May 29th, 2009 15:37

To 999,
The percentage to get a C grade on the foundation paper is approximately 70%.
On the higher paper it’s 35%.
I have the calculator paper tomorrow. =/.
I’m retaking maths on college, I got a D in high school. But I’m on track to get a B this time
. So I’m not too woried. But help in which topics to revise would be appreciated
