Equations

Friday, January 19th, 2007

The person known as mathstutorbiz has made an interesting video about solving equations. I’ll be going through this topic next week, so see what you think about the presentation here. The presentation is a bit home made, but the mathematical content is spot on.

Mathstutorbiz has other videos at YouTube that will be useful later on. Look for the ones with ‘Intermediate’ in the title.

Multiplying out terms

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

5 minutes on how to multiply terms. You will need to revise your directed numbers and powers! If you would rather just have the slides and not have to listen to me, try the SlideShare version.

Algebra notation

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

Click here to see a slide show on Algebra notation

You should see a title slide and some controls to go to the next slide above. If not, check that you have the Macromedia Flash player loaded.

The sides just summarise part of what we said in the last lesson about algebraic notation. The next installment will deal with multiplying and dividing algebraic expressions!

Algebra: starting points

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

I’m following the GCSE Textbook, so we start with ‘making up formulas’, then move onto collecting like terms and multiplying terms, and then look at multiplying out brackets. Below are some links into the BBC GCSE BiteSize Web site about these topics. I’ll be doing some YouTubes about algebra once I have the basics down and know what people need help with.

Data Handling revision

Sunday, January 07th, 2007

We need to start the Algebra, Shape and Space module now. I will schedule a revision session for Data and for Number before the March exams.

BBC ByteSize has some revision material on data handling

As we all pay for this through the TV licence, I think you ought to get your money’s worth! I’d allocate an hour to working through theĀ  ByteSize tests and seeing where you need to ask more questions or do more work.
